The Deadliest Addiction Every year, cigarette smoking kills more than 480,000 Americans, with more than 41,000 of these deaths from exposure to secondhand smoke1. With the United States constantly passing new laws to protect us, you would imagine that with this huge statistic, banning cigarette sales and distribution would be a main priority. Not only is the person smoking harming themselves, but people are also getting cancer from second hand smoke when they’ve never picked up a cigarette in their lives. The production and sale of cigarettes should be made illegal because it is the deadliest addiction and tobacco companies are targeting the youth to carry on their careers longer. The public is never in agreeance with anything, of course, so the opposing group makes this statement in an article, â€Å"the evidence that prohibition significantly reduces levels of use of the thing you re banning is extremely weak; meanwhile, prohibition drives the social harm caused by that thing way, way up,† states editor Tom Chivers2. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but there is so much evidence on the negative impact this habit has on your health that we have no choice but to take action and prevent others from becoming a victim also.
